In the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, Bio Kinetics research team member Dr. Coop DeRenne, along with other collaborators, published a review of research studies into the effects of resistance training on throwing athletes. 22 of the 26 studies showed significant performance improvement in players who implemented resistance training over players who only threw.

Hitting and pitching are two of the most “explosive” skills in all of sports! By that, we mean the activities that generates the highest levels of acceleration and force in the shortest amount of time. Yet the “old-school” belief is that baseball players are not really athletes and training is simply not that important. This approach hasn’t worked out all that well, as hundreds of millions of dollars are lost each year because MLB players end up on the injured reserve list, and millions more are spent on orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists to “fix” those injured players. The fact is that most baseball players are simply not prepared physically to perform their skill in the explosive manner it requires. Because of the nature of this activity’s, baseball players should be the most conditioned athletes not the least!

Baseball players are rotational throwers and strikers and any strength training program should be designed to prepare the player for those activities. In order to receive the full benefit of resistance training, you must train the correct muscle group over the actual hitting and pitching range of motion. Strength gains in the wrong muscle group or in an incorrect plane could actually decrease bat and arm speed. A hitter or pitcher with only average strength but is functionally strong will produce more bat and arm speed, in a healthier manner, than hitters and pitcher with tremendous strength who are less functionally strong. Contrary to popular opinion, the baseball doesn’t care how much you bench press.

Despite recent advancements in the field of strength and conditioning, players continue to go on the disabled list at an alarming rate. Much of this has been attributed to overuse, while others have pointed to a lack of understanding of the specific needs of the rotational hitting pitching athletes. Many strength coaches are often accused of training their rotational athletes with an emphasis on linear movement, as if they were non-rotational athletes or body builders. A healthy, successful baseball player requires a specific balance of functional strength, power and mobility. Strength and body mechanics work hand in hand – you must develop them together to succeed at any skill sport.
